Courtney’s background in family and child protection and immigration law informs her keen attention to these issues in her immigration proceedings as well as family court matters. Her years of experience handling everything from detention reviews, admissibility hearings, to refugee claims and Federal Court matters has proven invaluable to her clients.
Courtney is a Senior Associate lawyer practising in the areas of immigration and family law at Kumararatne Law. Courtney has been with the firm since 2016, after joining as a summer student and completing her articles with Kumararatne Law before getting called to the Bar in 2019.
In the last five years, Courtney has represented a variety of clients in complex matters in immigration, criminal, and family law, including, refugee claims and appeals, requests for deferral of removal, applications in the Federal Court of Canada, H&C applications, spousal sponsorships and matters with persons charged with impaired driving and assaults. She has also worked on numerous family files.
Courtney received her J.D. from the University of Ottawa in 2018. While attending law school, she worked in the criminal division at the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic. She also volunteered as a peer mentor with the Women’s Legal Mentorship Program and The Ontario Justice Education Network where she attended grade 6 classrooms and ran a mock trial.
Outside of work, Courtney serves as the upcoming Artistic Director for “PushPULL Dance Inc” a local dance company.
